Are you prepared to start your trucking business?  Below we discuss the difference between intrastate vs interstate authority carrier and its corresponding compliance requirements, a key factor in a successful trucking business.

Intrastate vs Interstate

Interstate carrier authorities travel within and outside their base state. Compliance requirements for these carriers are listed below.

DOT – required on vehicles that haul cargo or transport passengers.

MC Number – required to travel between states. The type of authority issued will determine the type and level of insurance coverage needed.

UCR (United Carrier Registration) – required for carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions across the United States or provinces of Canada.

IRP (Interstate Registration Plan) – required on vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 lbs and/or have three or more axles.

IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) – Fuel use must be accurately recorded and filed with one’s base jurisdictions four times a year (quarterly reporting). Use our Road Receipt app to easily and accurately store your fuel receipts!

Weight Distance Permit – required on vehicles traveling through Kentucky, New York, New Mexico, and Oregon.

Intrastate carrier authorities do not travel outside their base state. Legal travel for intrastate carriers requires issuance of a DOT number if transporting hazardous materials or if you travel in one of the jurisdictions that require a DOT.
